Diale Tlholwe
Tlholwe was born in Meyerton and attended
school in Alexandra Township, Mofolo (Soweto),
Baitshoki (Itsoseng, Lichternburg) and
Tlakula High School (Kwa Thema, Springs). It is at Tlakula that he
developed his interest in writing when a play he wrote for his
school won the first prize in a local competition. He then went to
Fort Hare University to study Law. Due to the student disruptions
at the university his bursary was cancelled and he gave up his
studies there. He then worked as a production clerk for a metal
company in springs before moving to Katlehong in Germiston. He
then enrolled at the then Transvaal teachers training college, in
soshanguve where he received his teachers certificate. He was
elected to be the chairman of the cultural committee at the
institution. After leaving the college he argus journalism cadet
school run by the star newspaper. He did not however pursue a
career in journalism and returned briefly to teaching. He was
appointed an acting principal at a rural primary school in the
Free State. He later became a client and local government liaison
officer for a consultancy company in germiston.
Tlholwe has always loved reading. He became
a member of a group of book lovers and writing that met monthly in
katlehong. Though the group was primarily focused on poetry he
enjoyed the meetings. In 2004 the group brought out an anthology
sponsored by the centre for the book called walala wasala. He
contributed a Setswana short story titled Gaufi.
In 2008 his debut novel Ancient Rites was
published by Kwela Books. In 2009 another short story-Anger
Mismanagement-was included in the anthology Bad Company published
by pan Macmillan. An article of his: “place of rocks” appeared
in the July 2010 British Airways Magazine Horizon. It was a
special edition featuring four South African authors, writing on
the theme “inspiration” and the places that inspired their
writing.
He stays in Spruitview, Ekurhuleni in the
East Rand
Tlholwe has always wanted to write stories
and ever since he won a prize for a play he wrote while still at
school this dream had been there in his mind. He holds a diploma
in journalism but fiction has always been his goal. He has worked
as a production clerk at a metal company, a teacher and for a
consultancy company. His first published work was short story
written in Setswana called Gaufi. His first novel titled Ancient
Rites was brought out in 2008 by Kwela Books. Another short story
of his-Anger Mismanagement- was published by pan macmillan in 2009
in the anthology Bad Company
